I was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I lived in Belfast until Maureen and I were married, then lived in the U.S. (Ames, Iowa), England (Reading and Berkhamsted), the U.S. again (Rochester) and currently in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
My university background is in the Sciences, specifically in Chemistry (Queens University, Belfast) and X-ray Crystallography (Iowa State University). The ability to deduce a 3-D molecular structure from an X-ray diffraction pattern still seems miraculous.
If Nature is probed, it will reveal itself.
I worked for many years for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY. I learned about the wonderful properties of light and how to design better Color Negative films, first in Kodak Research in England and then in Rochester.
My wife and I moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 2019 to consolidate our family.
My time at Kodak allowed me to understand how color works and the rules for blending dyes and pigments. I started painting seriously about twenty years ago, with the mentorship of Steve Carpenter, an internationally known artist. I am indebted for his advice and friendship.
